Data Access for LIGO on the OSG
During 2015 and 2016, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory
(LIGO) conducted a three-month observing campaign. These observations delivered
the first direct detection of gravitational waves from binary black hole
mergers. To search for these signals, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration uses
the PyCBC search pipeline. To deliver science results in a timely manner, LIGO
collaborated with the Open Science Grid (OSG) to distribute the required
computation across a series of dedicated, opportunistic, and allocated
resources. To deliver the petabytes necessary for such a large-scale
computation, our team deployed a distributed data access infrastructure based
on the XRootD server suite and the CernVM File System (CVMFS). This data access
strategy grew from simply accessing remote storage to a POSIX-based interface
underpinned by distributed, secure caches across the OSG.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PEARC1
Systematic benchmarking of HTTPS third party copy on 100Gbps links using XRootD
The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider provides a data challenge. The
amount of data recorded from the experiments and transported to hundreds of
sites will see a thirty fold increase in annual data volume. A systematic
approach to contrast the performance of different Third Party Copy(TPC)
transfer protocols arises. Two contenders, XRootD-HTTPS and the GridFTP are
evaluated in their performance for transferring files from one server to
an-other over 100Gbps interfaces. The benchmarking is done by scheduling pods
on the Pacific Research Platform Kubernetes cluster to ensure reproducible and
repeatable results. This opens a future pathway for network testing of any TPC
transfer protocol.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
BOSS-LDG: A Novel Computational Framework that Brings Together Blue Waters, Open Science Grid, Shifter and the LIGO Data Grid to Accelerate Gravitational Wave Discovery
We present a novel computational framework that connects Blue Waters, the
NSF-supported, leadership-class supercomputer operated by NCSA, to the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Data Grid via Open Science
Grid technology. To enable this computational infrastructure, we configured,
for the first time, a LIGO Data Grid Tier-1 Center that can submit
heterogeneous LIGO workflows using Open Science Grid facilities. In order to
enable a seamless connection between the LIGO Data Grid and Blue Waters via
Open Science Grid, we utilize Shifter to containerize LIGO's workflow software.
This work represents the first time Open Science Grid, Shifter, and Blue Waters
are unified to tackle a scientific problem and, in particular, it is the first
time a framework of this nature is used in the context of large scale
gravitational wave data analysis. This new framework has been used in the last
several weeks of LIGO's second discovery campaign to run the most
computationally demanding gravitational wave search workflows on Blue Waters,
and accelerate discovery in the emergent field of gravitational wave
astrophysics. We discuss the implications of this novel framework for a wider
ecosystem of Higher Performance Computing users.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Accepted as a Full Research Paper to the 13th

Highly graphitic Fe-doped carbon xerogels as dual-functional electro-Fenton catalysts for the degradation of tetracycline in wastewater
Fe-doped carbon xerogels with a highly developed graphitic structure were synthesized by a one-step sol-gel polymerization. These highly graphitic Fe-doped carbons are presented as promising dual-functional electro-Fenton catalysts to perform both the electro-reduction of O2 to H2O2 and H2O2 catalytic decomposition (Fenton) for wastewater decontamination. The amount of Fe is key to the development of this electrode material, since affects the textural properties; catalyzes the development of graphitic clusters improving the electrode conductivity; and influences the O2-catalyst interaction controlling the H2O2 selectivity but, at the same time is the catalyst for the decomposition of the electrogenerated H2O2 to OH• radicals for the organic pollutants oxidation. All materials achieve the development of ORR via the 2-electron route. The presence of Fe considerably improves the electro-catalytic activity. However, a mechanism change seems to occur at around −0.5 V in highly Fe-doped samples. At potential lower than −0.5 eV, the present of Feδ+ species or even Fe–O–C active sites favour the selectivity to 2e-pathway, however at higher potentials, Feδ+ species are reduced favoring a O–O strong interaction enhancing the 4e-pathway. The Electro-Fenton degradation of tetracycline was analyzed. The TTC degradation is almost complete (95.13%) after 7 h of reaction without using any external Fenton-catalysts.Grupo RNM-172Universidad de Granada / CBUAMCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ y "ERDF A way of making Europe” (PID2021-127803OB-I00)Junta de Andalucía (P18-RTJ-2974 y B. From Fenton and ORR 2e−-Type Catalysts to Bifunctional Electrodes for Environmental Remediation Using the Electro-Fenton Process
Currently, the presence of emerging contaminants in water sources has raised concerns worldwide due to low rates of mineralization, and in some cases, zero levels of degradation through conventional treatment methods. For these reasons, researchers in the field are focused on the use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as a powerful tool for the degradation of persistent pollutants. These AOPs are based mainly on the in-situ production of hydroxyl radicals (OH center dot) generated from an oxidizing agent (H2O2 or O-2) in the presence of a catalyst. Among the most studied AOPs, the Fenton reaction stands out due to its operational simplicity and good levels of degradation for a wide range of emerging contaminants. However, it has some limitations such as the storage and handling of H2O2. Therefore, the use of the electro-Fenton (EF) process has been proposed in which H2O2 is generated in situ by the action of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it is important to mention that the ORR is given by two routes, by two or four electrons, which results in the products of H2O2 and H2O, respectively. For this reason, current efforts seek to increase the selectivity of ORR catalysts toward the 2e(-) route and thus improve the performance of the EF process. This work reviews catalysts for the Fenton reaction, ORR 2e(-) catalysts, and presents a short review of some proposed catalysts with bifunctional activity for ORR 2e(-) and Fenton processes. Finally, the most important factors for electro-Fenton dual catalysts to obtain high catalytic activity in both Fenton and ORR 2e(-) processes are summarized.Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain (MICINN)

Moving the California distributed CMS xcache from bare metal into containers using Kubernetes
The University of California system has excellent networking between all of
its campuses as well as a number of other Universities in CA, including
Caltech, most of them being connected at 100 Gbps. UCSD and Caltech have thus
joined their disk systems into a single logical xcache system, with worker
nodes from both sites accessing data from disks at either site. This setup has
been in place for a couple years now and has shown to work very well.
Coherently managing nodes at multiple physical locations has however not been
trivial, and we have been looking for ways to improve operations. With the
Pacific Research Platform (PRP) now providing a Kubernetes resource pool
spanning resources in the science DMZs of all the UC campuses, we have recently
migrated the xcache services from being hosted bare-metal into containers. This
paper presents our experience in both migrating to and operating in the new
environment
